On Paedobaptism

"From the beginning, consistent paedobaptists treat their children as Christians so that the social and cultural nurture of the child is simultaneously his or her nurture in Christian character and faith."

From the Westminster Confession of Faith- "Secondary means (baptism) are real and have efficacy."

"The idea is to raise your child so that he reaches the same level of psycho-social and religious maturity. The two should be indistinguishable."

Paedobaptism implies that the Gospel's solution to the gap (in culture/nature) is not to lay an entirely new set of tracks, but to close the gap by redeeming the original created means from sin."

I think I see why, what and how you are studying and pondering on this. Is there a chapter in the book on the dedication of infants? Raising a child is an awesome undertaking, in the true meaning of the word. No pun intended in word, but it does work two ways there.

Hey Aunt Ruth,
No, Dr. Leithart does not touch on the aspect of infant dedications. The book that we are thinking through is focused primarily on what baptism is and is not an argument for or against the baptism of infants.
It has been a good read though, and caused us to take this particular sacrament a little more seriously.
Love,

I have a copy of the last sermon of our ancestor Elder John Wise. It is on the Brethren sacrament of foot washing. It is great to read and gives new meaning to my childhood interpretation of it. My mother told us about it because her mother was Brethren. I think we do not think of sacraments as sacred often enough.
